Amtrak operates two long-distance trains through Iowa: the California Zephyr (daily Chicago-Burlington-Osceola-Denver-San Francisco Bay Area) and the Southwest Chief (daily Chicago-Fort Madison-Kansas City-Los Angeles). During FY13 nearly 60,000 people boarded or alighted from passenger trains in Iowa.

The immediate goal in the first phase of an expanded passenger rail system is to achieve passenger rail service from Iowa City (via the Quad Cities) to Chicago and Dubuque to Chicago, with later phases exploring further expansion. Illinois DOT (IDOT) is proceeding with planning for development of new passenger rail service between Dubuque and Chicago.
